Recovery / 1970
Apollo 13
When the mission changes, the team’s ability to adapt becomes the mission.

THE HISTORICAL RECORD
Recovery under constraint
Apollo 13 launched on April 11, 1970. An onboard failure prevented the planned lunar landing. The crew and ground teams worked toward a safe return, using the lunar module to support the crew. The astronauts returned to Earth on April 17.

LESSONS TO INVESTIGATE
Carry the question into the next task.
- Keep resource constraints visible alongside the procedure.
- Preserve why an improvised solution was accepted.
- Make handover carry the current state and the reasoning.
PROPOSED REHEARSAL · ORIGINAL EXERCISE
Practise the decision.
A ground-analog team receives a constrained inventory and changing resource estimates. Agree a recovery plan, explain assumptions and hand the plan to a fresh team.
This is a proposed learning activity inspired by the case. It is separate from the historical record and is not an account of an EON mission deployment.
